My story

Background

Monica Romano, first transgender city councillor in Milan
Monica Romano, first transgender city councillor in Milan

I come from a family with Ligurian and Sicilian roots, a modest family with limited economic means but rich in love, dignity and a strong sense of responsibility.

I did not benefit from shortcuts or privileges. Education, constant commitment and hard work were the tools through which I achieved social mobility and personal emancipation.

This background has deeply shaped my political outlook. I strongly believe in social mobility, in the central role of public education, and in the responsibility of institutions to reduce inequalities rather than reinforce them.

For this reason, my political action has always focused on issues that affect people’s everyday lives: work, social justice, public safety, public services, mobility and equal opportunities for those who start from a disadvantaged position.

Gender affirmation path

My gender affirmation path, which began over twenty-five years ago and concluded in 2006 with the recognition by an Italian court of my female gender, is an important part of my story, but what I desire today is to be recognized for my person in her entirety, in particular for my skills, abilities and for my contribution to society.

The first transgender person elected to the City Council in Milan

Monica Romano was elected in 2021, becoming the first openly transgender city councillor in Milan’s history.

I was elected to the City Council of Milan in 2021, becoming the first openly transgender person to hold this role in city’s history.

This achievement represents not only a personal milestone, but also a step forward for democratic representation and equal access to public institutions.
